The plant kingdom can help clean contaminated soil and water, removing pollutants. International workshop “Soil and water bioremediation” organized by Sant’Anna Institute of Life Sciences, to take place on June 9-10 at Sant’Anna School for Advanced Studies, will focus on recent strategies for bioremediation, different and multidisciplinary approaches for implementation of bioremediation using a combination of experimental techniques.

Sant’Anna School is hosting two-day international meeting of world-renowned researchers sharing scientific findings and different approaches regarding the phytoremediation. Professor David Salt of University of Aberdeen, Scotland, will deliver the welcome keynote address entitled “The root endodermis acts as a gateway for vascular transport”. The seminars will focus on heavy metal absorption, transportation and accumulation physiological mechanisms, use of microorganisms to consume and digest organic substances and then the assessment of biodegradation of organic xenobiotic pollutants.

Researchers and participants will visit the experimental station for phytoremediation in Vecchiano (Pisa) which has been operating since 2011 to assess the effectiveness of three different techniques of phytoremediation and treatment of used peat moss, with particular attention to the area of the lake of Massaciuccoli where water quality is adequate to allow experiments.
